Cupcake DISASTER!!

So tonight I learned I'm certainly NO Martha Stewart!! Let me explain. I've got a new calling in my ward and it's as Enrichment Leader. One of the biggest points the Relief Society Presidency keeps pressing is to make everything from scratch. I'm sure some of you are asking yourselves, well then why in the world would they put SANDRA in this calling, seeing as that she doesn't cook AT ALL!! Right, I asked myself the same question, but whatever, callings are to make us GROW in areas we are not to competent in. Well...let's just say that tonight I realized I've got a long way to go!!

Our Relief Society Birthday Party is coming up and we decided that the one thing we'll make from scratch are cupcakes. Sounded easy to me and so I thought that before I hand out this recipe (which by the way I got from my latest Martha Stewart magazine) I'd try it myself. Mikaela has a little Valentine Party tomorrow for preschool so I thought what a perfect opportunity to make a batch. What little girl doesn't love cupcakes!!

Well, let me just say that they sure as heck did not look like Martha Stewart's!! In my opinion they actually turned out HORRIBLE!!! Just look at the picture!!! When I got them out of the oven I was mortified. They don't even look like cupcakes!! I filled them exactly how the recipe said but apparently that was still too much. My lovely husband said that at least I learned that the recipe actually makes more and so it would be less work come our party time, but at that moment that was not that comforting.

At any rate, I decided to try one and they were actually really good. So at least I know the recipe is decent. I tried my best to salvage what I could and below is what I ended up with. I hope those girls at preschool won't be too picky with the mangled looking cupcakes I made!!

The only saying that has kept playing through my head tonight is "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again." Gosh, I sure do hope that next time (or at least for the night of the Birthday Party) they come out right! Keep your fingers crossed for me!
*Lanae-If you're reading this, tonight I sure could've used your help!! Your cupcakes always look amazing!! Send some of your wisdom up my way will ya!!

From scratch? Are you serious? What are they trying to prove???

Well the good news is, they're chocolate, and they have frosting on them. I'm sure no one will complain!!

I've found many a problem with Martha's recipes and know other people have too, so maybe you can just pass the blame on this one!

I love you! You crack me up! You probably did just fine just put to much in the cups. You are so funny they didn't look like they turned out all that bad, from what I could see they looked pretty cute to tell you the truth.

LOL...I would have offered to run across the street, but I don't do 'scratch'. Although, I am pretty good at making rainbow ones that come in a gorgeous red box! Besides...it's what's on the inside that counts (and it sounds like it was yummy!).

Maybe it's our high altitude...add more flour like on BOXED recipes. Boxed is the only way I know! Really great try...but the party ones will be just fine i'm sure of it!

Oh, I can relate! I made cupcakes (from scratch) for my Juliet's birthday early this year and as the little kids were arriving I realized they had a bizarre bitter aftertaste. I had to rely on the fact that little kids only the icing, and I made a cake from a box for the party that we had later for family.
